With just a little extra effort it is more than possible to save a considerable amount of money when you go out to do your regular grocery shopping. All it takes is a little extra time, a little extra thought, and a little more awareness.

The first thing to make sure that you do is to create a shopping list. In fact, you'll find that these very cheap products are almost always very much the same quality as the more expensive goods, and in many cases are even manufactured by the same company, but with different labels added!

Health Department endangers General Public...

On April 3rd, 2010 in the City of Iron Mountain, Michigan a lock was found cut on the cities water reservoir. The State of Michigan DNR or DEQ recommended a IMMEDIATE BOIL ADVISORY for the whole city. It took our Health Dept a total of SIX HOURS to contact MAYBE 30 restaurants in town. SIX HOURS!!! The water Boil Advisory went into Immediate effect at 1:30pm on Saturday afternoon. By 3:30 Local Radio and News Papers got the warning out because the city sent them press releases.. According to some local restaurants, they received their warning to STOP serving water and fountain drinks between 5:30pm - 7:30pm. The Health Department confirmed that McDonald's was ORDERED to stop at 7:30pm. I RECORDED McDONALD'S PRETTY CLOE TO 10:00PM???? This is a SMALL town in Upper Michigan, we are 100 miles North of Green Bay, Wisconsin. I am concerned about the RESPONSE TIME for this HEALTH DEPARTMENT. It took them over SIX HOURS to contact NO more than 30 Restaurants. That would be 5 per hour were notified.. How can anybody in this small town NOT be concerned over our SAFETY? They should be held accountable for their actions OR LACK OF I SHOULD SAY,,,,,, This Health Department stated after this Advisory was over that McDonald's may have been a little slow to act, they finally did.. Sure they did- OVER EIGHT HOURS LATER!!! The OWNER of this McDonalds says he was informed by the store manager at 7:30 that the city was under a "Water Advisory"- He said the manager NEVER said BOIL.... His ...

How to Stay Well

When someone I love gets a cold or flu bug...it hurts! So many medical doctors over the years have asked me not how to get well, but how to stay well. It seems there is nothing in their black bag for prevention. So if you are someone who travels frequently, easily contracts a cold if someone sneezes nearby or if you are just sick too many times per year...you need to know how to stay healthier. Here are some tips:

Look at nature, what color is most prevalent? No it is not the blue sky overhead, it is GREEN! The green plants that landscape the highest mountains and down to the ocean floors give us a clue that we need to consume large quantities of greens for protection. You see it is those green plants that continually clean our environment from pollutants whether airborne, water, or ground sources. Green plants specifically are charged with the responsibility to provide us with oxygen while protecting our environment which in turn makes for healthier lives. So if you cringe at the site of spinach salads, romaine lettuce, snap peas, broccoli, asparagus, Swiss chard, collard greens, or kale you are truly missing out on one of the earth's greatest health resources. And you know what, people in America do the silliest thing - they chop off the tops of vegetables and throw them away! What the heck are we thinking people? The tops of vegetables contain the highest amounts of nutrients. In plant chemistry we learn that nature provides a perfect balance if we adhere to the rules. For instance, a carrot is filled with beta-carotene, a form of vitamin A that is a rich source of nutrients known to protect our eyes, skin, and mucous membranes as well as being one of the most common anti-oxidants known on the planet. Well the tops of the carrots should not be discarded because they contain huge amounts of other nutrients such as potassium, iron, magnesium, and phosphorus. The potassium rich carrot tops are wonderful in soups (keep the lid on) because potassium is known to help remove toxins from the bloodstream. Sodium brings nutrients in and potassium takes the waste away. Magnesium keeps your bowels moving and that will also help you to stay well.

Okay, if you won't eat your greens, I will have to give you some alternatives for healthy survival. I assure you that if you chop or shred raw veggies you can discreetly add them directly to your soups, salads or other dishes without much flavor change at all. If you would dare to visit a "health food" store; now there is another clue, you will find some of the most magnificent products to enhance your health. In a high-quality shop you will discover that there are compressed vegetables, encapsulated veggies and even veggies in powdered form that can be added to juice to disguise the flavor. Some companies have really gotten smart and have begun making health bars that are comprised of greens along with nuts, seeds, and grains; a much better substitute for a regular granola bar. Yes, compressed greens do taste like grass and yes you will probably want to barf if you chew them unless you are like me and other avid preventive-crazed people on this planet. But you haven't lived baby until you have downed your very first shot of wheatgrass at a wheatgrass bar!

When I was a little girl my father took us kids out to the back yard to teach us about plants; wise man my father. He taught us about how dandelions were good for us because they helped to clean our bodies by stimulating the liver. You know, he was so right. Those herbs and plants with a bitter taste actually due stimulate the liver. So if you are so inclined, most grocery stores even carry dandelion greens that you can add to your salads. You can lightly steam them then saute' with extra virgin olive oil and garlic, or be brave and just add them to other lettuce mixes. Another wonderful and a bit more unusual plant is watercress; it has a slightly mustardy taste with a bit of a zip to it and is "to die for" as a complement to roasted garlic and goat cheese. So now you understand that adding greens of every kind is important and we will move on to other ways that will help you stay well.

If you push yourself too hard, travel too frequently, don't sleep, or worry a lot, it will depress your immune response and this can make you more susceptible to illness. We must rest physically, mentally and emotionally if we want to remain strong. So, know your limits and try not to push beyond them on a consistent basis. The older we get the less "wiggle" room there is for abusing our bodies. Embark on some kind of a plan that includes relaxation. Try meditation, deep breathing exercises, yoga, listening to soothing music on a plane when you must fly. Get out of doors as often as possible, we do need sunshine. Eating wisely is important. Everyone who eats animal proteins, like juicy steaks, chicken, lamb, veal, or pork also consumes various anti-biotics which in turn destroy the probiotics in your gut. We need those probiotic strains to remain resistant to viruses, bacteria, pathogens, and parasites. Taking a wide-spectrum probiotic blend is paramount to good health today. Also, since most people eat diets that consist of many heated foods they are not getting adequate nutrition because heating destroy many of the vitamins and mineral vitality as well as the much needed enzymes. Digestive enzymes are extremely important to good health and as we age the production of these enzymes diminishes. We will always be dependent upon exogenous enzymes to sustain health. Regarding your daily diet, it is extremely important that you never eat when you are too hot, too cold, too tired, or upset in any way because the brain sends signals to first remedy your ailment and will not readily produce enzymes during those times. That is why animals with their innate wisdom intact turn away from food when they are injured or ill. We need to take the hint. Eat simply when you are sick, like a baby. In fact baby foods for some people may work well because they are nearly masticated and easier to digest.

So my basic rule is this: eat two-thirds of live foods or lightly steamed foods daily and one third cooked. Be sure that you get enough fruits and veggies. If you had to fend for your own food daily you would be walking long distances eating more plant foods and less animal sources; although depending upon climate, occupation and heritage some people absolutely need meat proteins and would become sick quickly if they switched to a vegetarian diet.

Get rid of the junk food in your daily routine; no soda pop, candy, cakes if you are susceptible to illness. Cut back on coffee and sugar of every kind because it will change your chemistry quickly from alkaline to more acid. Acid chemistry tends to get sick more quickly. What does that mean? People who lead hectic lives, have many people who count on them, are angry, upset, worried, eat a lot of junk food, cooked foods, drink, smoke and burn the candle at both ends will always have more acidic chemistry and will generally be at greater risk for catching colds and the flu. How do I know this to be true? Seventeen years of biochemical testing to find the most vibrant people around the globe. All of them knew how to balance and to create a good life from the physical to the emotional and on to the spiritual as well. You have to know what thrills you and keep that in your life.

If you do feel like you are coming down with a cold real chicken soup may make you feel better faster though researchers aren't sure why. I believe that really good chicken soup made from scratch will include some of the most potent plant sources of anti-viral and anti-biotics; nature's protectors such as garlic and onions. Garlic is known to help fight bacterial and viral infections and will also help boost your memory as it contains sulphur-rich elements that drive nutrients up to the brain. Side note here: Do you know that a study conducted in Oxford, England found that men who consumed garlic at least twice per week were one-third less likely than other men to develop prostate cancer. Lab studies demonstrate that the sulfur compounds in garlic block the synthesis of carcinogens known as nitrosamines. Garlic also stimulates the synthesis of glutathione which is known to deactivate certain carcinogens and it also protects cell membranes as a powerful anti-oxidant. So eat garlic and if you are dating make sure your date eats it too. Then we have those vegetable tops I mentioned which bring in a rich source of minerals and other nutrients. The protein from the chicken will be broken down into amino acids which are the building blocks of life. So I always keep a container of homemade chicken soup in the freezer!

Another factor in staying well, believe this or not, is having a wonderful love relationship! The joyful experiences in life help to improve mood and the harmony of metabolism. It is a fact that patients with a better attitude will heal more rapidly and overcome obstacles that others may not. So when we are in love and enjoying an active sex life we signal the brain that we are still vital, we are not going to die any time soon! It is not just the act of sex that stimulates this immune signal activity but the coupling of the powerful emotion of love that will help to keep you well. When you are ill it always helps to have a loving person nearby to care for you. It is always easier to heal when you are in a nurturing and soothing environment.

Get well faster by keeping your bowels moving. If someone has ever told you that you were full of it - that is a very toxic statement. Well, it is true that when our bodies do not consistently and completely eliminate daily there is toxic residue that can actually make you sick. Include foods that stimulate this area of the body because actually, the crux of your immune response stems from the gut. We need enough fiber in our diets daily. Eating foods that are rich sources of fiber include whole grains, the outer coverings of fruits and vegetables, flax seed meal, and sand -no, not sand, I was just kidding, but wondering if you were still with me here. Soluble fibers are those that dissolve in water and form a gel. Soluble fiber is found in fruits, oats and beans. Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water and rather absorbs water which will increase the weight of feces and the speed at which water passes through the intestines and out of the body. By eating a wide variety of plant foods and whole grains you will be sure to get your daily lot. If not, you can always buy some invisible fiber even at your local drug stores today.

On top of fiber it is imperative that we have enough probiotic strains in our intestines in order to fight disease. Probiotics are those friendly bugs that are found in such foods as kefirs, yogurts and clabbered milk products. In the stores today you can find dozens of probiotically enhanced foods. I don't think eating yogart and cultured foods is enough today - so I encourage people to take supplemental probiotics and the strongest and widest spectrum available!

Now here is something else that can make everything I have just said even better. Every person you have ever known and any person you will ever meet needs enzymes! Enzymes help to promote wellness by encouraging more complete breakdown and assimilation of every nutrient from all food forms. Why do you need enzymes? Because they are the catalysts for every single metabolic process your body undertakes and we lose enzyme production by 1% per year. By the time we are in our mid-fifties we have about 1/3 of what is needed to complete digestion and take care of other processes. All of us will forever be dependent upon exogenous enzymes, or those that are found outside of the human body. That basically means that we need to eat raw fruits and vegetables frequently because cooking foods above 119 degrees will destroy all of the enzymes that help to break down our foods into micro particles. So you are not only what you eat, but you are more precisely what you absorb!

Many of you have asked for my secrets and beliefs about anti-aging and my personal health regime so I will give it to you in brief; by no means is this complete. To insure that I am getting more nutrients from every single bite, and protecting my immune system daily, here is what I take: A multi-strain 30 billion count probiotic blend, along with a wide-spectrum digestive enzyme formula. I take at least 2 probiotics and 9 enzymes daily and between meals to heal faster from illness or injury. I also take a food grade multi-vitamin, enough essential fatty acids from fish oil, or flax, and compressed super food greens such as spirulina, wheatgrass and barley grasses. I include soy lecithin granules for my brain because it is a rich source of choline, one of the only known nutrients to pass the blood brain barrier, along with phosphatidyl serine. I eat a wide variety of foods and am sure to include every color of the rainbow throughout the week. Cayenne pepper and other heat-producing foods such as horseradish are always nearby because they stimulate circulation.

I drink only purified water and add fresh lemon juice at least once per day to keep myself more alkaline. I do not consume much alcohol, but I thoroughly enjoy good wine and occasional beer or other alcoholic beverage. I don't smoke, stay away from fried foods, smoked meats, creamed foods, sugar, and pastries for the most part. I attempt to do two thirds right with my diet and know that my body will generally forgive me when I screw up. I dry brush my skin with a loofa before exercising and then bathe because it opens the pores to help detoxify the largest organ-skin. I spend at least 30 minutes a day in the sunlight and if I can't walk out of doors I am always driving with the sunroof open to get adequate Vitamin D. I do some form of exercise daily. My cabinets are literally filled with supplements and homeopathic remedies--just like the kings and queens who understand the "best medicine does no harm(is not a drug) but strengthens you from the core."

Find a good homeopathic physician, and MD who has studied homeopathy and learn about it. I have taught my family to understand the science of homepathy. And as difficult as it may be to grasp how these remedies work, it is important to learn about them. It has always been an extremely wonderful experience to watch someone recover rapidly from a cold or flu or injury. Homeopathic remedies in the right hands can work marvelously to bolster your innate wisdom and immune response without risk of drug interaction. Check your local health food store for common remedies. I always choose homeopathy over any other OTC drugs first. Another important natural supplement I keep on hand, is powdered electrolytes, minerals and vitamins, especially vitamin c, potassium and zinc. You can find something called emergency c packets which include vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes all in one. This will work well to help you recover quickly; in crystallized form they are readily absorbed.

In order to be well consistently you must have enough oxygen in your blood - so please get out of doors to walk as often as possible. Also practicing deep breathing exercises or something such as yoga will benefit as well. During the day whenever you feel stressed just take a few minutes and do some deep breathing exercises and mentally inhale something you love, and exhale whatever is bothering you. This type of mental/physical exercise will help to relax you and in turn strengthen your mind/body connection - critical to true health.

My life is filled with many things that I love such as writing articles and books, composing music, volunteering, participating in sport activities, and helping others enjoy happier lives. I am sure to feed my spirit and practice meditation, walks in nature, and enjoy observing the world as a beautiful mosaic. I always challenge myself to try something new every day or at least frequently and attempt to keep fluid with life. I find that getting in a rut is painful, and stagnation or lack of circulation even in the physical body usually brings pain. So I like to engage in many different activities, have a wide variety of friends with vast interests because it keeps life spicy and interesting for me. Don't get me wrong, I am also quite capable and willing to just rest and do nothing at all when I feel pressured by life's responsibilities, or need healing time. If you find yourself ill too often or just stressed to the max you might consider getting away for a few days---the mountains or the ocean areas are good choices. The ionization is healthy, and the atmosphere soothing in many ways. Reconnect with nature and appreciate the landscapes we so often take for granted.

Beyond all of this, one of the greatest gifts and healers I have ever known- is love. Having a loving family and many wonderful loving friends has been a true blessing. Participating in things that thrill you will help keep your immune system strong and your mood up. If you are lucky enough to have a partner that you thoroughly adore, and someone who completely loves you, just as you are...now that is quite a gift and you will find that your life can be enhanced tenfold! Love for me is like a universal medicine for the soul, without it we are often sick, and sour, and quite unhappy. Share your love. With love in our hearts we can all do great things!

Why Are Green Drinks Everywhere And How Do We Choose?

Just Starting with a green drink? If you are juicing that's one way to drink greens. The other is to purchase greens which you mix with water, then the question comes up for a "taste good" and "feel good" greens, and of course how do you decide?

Once you find a great greens and commit to hydrating, you are taking the first step to pH balance, alkalizing and optimal health. You will also want to consider an alkalizing catalyst to add to your water, raising the pH of the green drink, which will help you accomplish your goals.

This segment is about "how to drink a greendrink" and "why we should drink a greendrink".The process outlined below will help you increase your hydration to the levels you only thought you could. It's a lot easier to drink when you are thirsty, and following the protocol seems to inspire hydration levels that work well for many of us, so read on and find your path. Plus you can always call us with questions.

Drinking greens is really our best way to make up the difference in what our body requires (nutritionally) and because we mix greens in water, we are improving our levels of hydration. Let's face it we can all eat perfect and still not receive enough nutrition, especially at a cellular level where we need it. So then the question comes, which "greens"? Not all greens or green drinks are alike, your green drink plays a major role in meeting your nutritional needs and while ingredients are key, so is processing and energy derived from the greens, the enzyme values.

The following instructions would apply to any greendrink, however keep in mind not all greendrinks are alike. Some may have ingredients that are not conducive to pH Balance. Vitamins and minerals from food co-factor one another, meaning they work synergistically, and one cannot work without the other (which is why it is difficult to receive nutrition from many OTC products), and many just plain taste bad. For the long haul you should discriminate and select a greendrink that has everything you need, tastes great and most importantly, becomes the difference between your diet and what your body requires.

Whenever you begin a greendrink, which consists of pure water mixed with greens and optimally an alkalizer, always remember it takes time for your body to adjust to absorbing new levels of nutrition, begin with small amounts and increase a little every three days until you get up to the recommended amount - no matter how many bottles you drink a day.

You don't have to force yourself to drink, here is what works for me and many pHBB members: Starting with a quart size drinking bottle:

Begin with ¼ of the full dosage of the greens and usually you can begin with full dosage of the alkalizer.

Every 3 days add a little more green and in time you will be at the full amount, and feeling more energized each day.

Practice Approach: My suggestion is to make a bottle upon rising, and drink it over 30 minutes to 2 hours

Make your second bottle an hour after lunch, drinking it over 30 minutes to 2 hours.

In the evening, about an hour after dinner until bedtime, drink water with alkalizer and fresh lemon or lime juice.

If you practice this way, within 3 days to a week you should become dry mouthed, wanting more to drink. It's a natural way to increase hydration, I've seen people go to 6-8 quarts a day, and back to down to a normal level. This is giving your brain what it needs, then your brain signal back to you that your body wants to re-hydrate, or exchange your body water! Naturally increasing your level of hydration - This is Great News!

Remember you are at least 70% water (just like the earth) and your water needs to be exchanged with pure water on a regular basis. A quart a day for every 30-50 pounds depending on your health. Alkalized water and delivering nutrition at a cellular level is the single most important step you can make toward a healthier tomorrow. Other supplements should be taken "less more often" versus "more less often", i.e., a small amount going in frequently will give you more consistent results.

Bakugan Battle Brawlers

Bakugan Battle Brawlers is a game for children between the ages of 4-12. It is like a modern game of marbles, based on a hit children's television series called Bakugan Battle Brawlers.

The Story
In a world not dissimilar to ours a strange event takes place, gaming cards start falling from the sky. A first people assume that they are simple playing cards, not dissimilar to Yugioh cards, but it is soon realised that they are something more. The characters all have fairly lovable sides and in the first episode Dan, the main character, is even friendly and respectful to his mother!

As a game Bakugan Battle Brawlers teaches the child strategic planning, math and can even get them off the Play Station. There are few games that are so engrossing and that can keep a child's attention for so long. It's also a great game for teaching social skills as the players interact both whilst playing within the arena and also as they develop the game as a hobby swapping notes on the strengths and weaknesses of the beast in the battle arena. Just wait for the cries of "Bakugan Stand!", "Power level increase to..." as they role play the parts of the characters.

A good game, one that will stand the test of time and will keep your child occupied and engaged for months.

Dream Work and the Fountain of Youth Within Us

Juan Ponce de Leon who arrived with Columbus, never found the legendary "fountain of youth," whose waters prevented aging. Currently, medicine is the geography in which that goal is still sought. Human beings always seek outside of themselves that which resides within: "I kept reaching around for you, but you were inside my hand." (Rumi)

Inside everyone, as if stored in the "deep freeze" of the unconscious mind, is any potential we have failed to actualize in our waking lives. We are all, to some degree, "failure to thrive" adults. Dreams are one profound tool that access these untapped resources. Dream images birth into our awareness the talents, capacities and energies stored within us. One extraordinary case made this abundantly clear.

June S. began exploring her dreams at age 68, when she was markedly declining. Her early dreams excavated the interior forces active in the present and eventually addressed her earliest roots. Her childhood in the deserts of Utah was rugged. Her sister did not survive childhood... and many parts of June did not either! Various non-essential qualities and their attendant life-force simply did not emerge from the unconscious.

After several years of intensive dream work, June reported a dream that changed her life--and my own understanding of dreams: June is holding three babies and is feeling a radiant joy filling her heart as she cradles and loves and adores these three infants. In dream-like logic, they are wrapped in lettuce leaves.

"What does this glorious dream mean? she inquired.

I said I suspected these were three aspects of her own psyche which had not survived her first year and were only now--7 decades later--ready to be born!

"Why would they be wrapped in lettuce leaves? she asked.

"Probably, to see if you're a vegetarian yet," by which I meant, that this new energy is not to be consumed directly and applied to more of whatever projects the ego already intends. It is new life meant to grow on its own terms.

I had no idea what this remarkable dream foreshadowed, and I have never seen another case so dramatically clear, though this process is very common in dreams. It is why late bloomers benefit so much from the midwifery of dream interpretation.

Within a year of this dream June called to tell me she was having a bit of a "problem:" while her peers were growing visibly older by the month, she was growing visibly younger. And gaining more energy and more enthusiasm and was developing new interests she had never had. She made it clear she would be happy to cope with this new "problem" however long it continued!

I lost track of June for several years, but got occasional reports when she resumed dating (and affiliated activities she had assumed were long extinct). I remember her joking about how all the "middle-agers" would tire from dancing (she was taking lessons) and from partying (she was giving lessons) long before her energy ran down. Then she returned to school to study mystical and spiritual topics and writing and poetry and art.

Next I heard she had completed the 400 mile peace march across Russia! When she started her Sunday evening poetry salons I attended and was amazed that her energy and life force had continued to strengthen for years after the famous "3 babies" dream which she marked as the turning point in her transformation. It seemed that three separate one year old aspects of her psychic energy had been "averaged in" with her 70+ year old self, resulting in reverse aging. Too bad Ponce de Leon died seeking the fountain in Florida, when it was within, all along.

Virtually every cutting-edge lecture or performance I attended for years revealed June S. well ahead of me in line or already seated somewhere in the front row. I remember telling her at a Robert Bly lecture, the best thing I could do to further my spiritual education would be to steal her daytimer.

When I last saw June she was in her eighties and still so full of life and enthusiasm and playfulness, I could not believe this was the deteriorating 68 year old I had met, long ago. I now know that unlived potentials reside within every person. Whenever we fail to thrive, we store that life force, and if we do the work to reclaim it, we find ourselves as poet David Whyte says, "growing younger each day toward death."

The Power of Pizza

Did you know that Pizza has power?

Pizza has the power to add a smile to a youngster, an adult, and a gathering! Often times, it is the simple things that bring glory to the end of a day. Think about it, your getting home late from work and you have to be someplace in two hours. Do you have time to cook? Probably not, you will probably need to change and find time for something to eat. What's the answer? Give your favorite pizza shop a call on the way home. This will free up some time for you, by the time you get ready for your plans, the pizza can be delivered! Most pizza shops even have plates and napkins available so you won't even have to worry about the dishes. That pizza probably just saved you a good 30 minutes of time and in that 30 minutes, you can grab a little bit of relaxation!

Are you planning a gathering for a sporting event, birthday party, or movie night? Would you rather be cooking all day and then have to clean all those dishes or would you rather save time and order some sheet pizza's? For gatherings of all sizes, most pizza shops can make enough pizza to tame the hunger bugs! It's simple on your part, leaves you will very little clean-up, and everybody loves pizza! Believe or not, most pizza shops love to offer pizza's to large groups, it gives them exposure to a number of people. When you are in need of a lot of pizza, ask the pizza shop about catering prices or large pizza specials or pizza coupons, it will earn you a better price per slice!

Finally we have the youngster of today that we all so dearly love! Think back to when you were a kid, do you ever have pizza night? I'm sure most of you did. I know my family had pizza night on a lot of Friday evenings. That night was usually the time we gathered and enjoyed some pizza and movies! It was togetherness and it always brought a smile to my face! Kids love pizza, it's a food they can truly enjoy. So if you have youngsters, set aside a night and enjoy some time together with that oh so good slice of pizza and a movie! Bring back those times of yester year, they seem to be forgotten sometimes in this day in age.

Do You Feel As Well As You Think You Should?

The fact that an inactive or sedentary lifestyle can age you at a much accelerated rate making you prone to disease is not exactly earth shattering news. We have known about this for a very long time. The choices you make especially about proper exercise and nutrition truly have a positive affect both in prevention and treatment on just about every disease known to man.

Those same choices can also make your energy levels rise or nose-dive, allow you to stay healthy or weaken and succumb to disease, nourish your body or slowly destroy it. Not exercising and eating poor quality mainly processed foods does not age you just a little bit it can chop more than a decade from your precious life.

But for many, the motivation to make changes often does not occur until a health problem sets in. But by then it may be too late. Most modern 'chronic lifestyle diseases' like the 'big three' heart disease, cancer and diabetes and dozens of others can take years or even decades to show themselves. They may have been smoldering away inside you silently but as they progress symptoms start to appear.

Often in the early stages the symptoms are not even enough for a doctor to diagnose a condition. This stage can continue for years but leave a person in a category that can only be described as the 'walking wounded'. Not sick but far from well either. Many people try not to complain but underneath worry about the fact they know something is wrong with them and that stress only makes the situation worse.

The good news is so much can be done to help. A proper strength training program is the very first place to start. Strengthening the muscular system of the human body also strengthens all the body systems including the immune system. The muscles are the storage sites for the proteins that make the special 'killer' cells that can fight and protect you from disease. So getting them toned up allows for more storage.

It is important that your exercise program is made up of mainly strength training exercises with resistance (weight) as endurance type activity such as walking, jogging or cycling will not directly tone your muscles and this is what is needed if you wish to improve your health. If you put some effort into your program you will get your heart rate up and pumping which will benefit your cardiovascular (heart/lung) system as well.

The next important thing you need to do is ditch as much processed 'so called' foods from your life. Replace them with natural, whole (still in one piece) unprocessed foods and cook them from scratch. Eat some raw vegetables or make juice from them to really help your body deal with whatever is wrong inside. Lean protein should also be eaten at each of 5-7 small meals throughout the day to help restore health.

The human body has magical healing abilities. All you have to do is give it the right tools to do its job. Proper exercise and proper nutrition are the first places to start and are completely under your control. So take responsibility and get yourself started.

Mangosteen Juice - Yet Another Scam Product

Today, I'd like to get a few things off my chest that have been bothering me for a while, namely the greed and abuse of consumers credibility of many companies that are selling outrageously expensive products for their so-called "anti-oxidant" power.

I'm going to first crush a few obvious 'scam' products, not because I those are necessarily the worst ones out there, but simply because these products get pitched all the time and I know that a lot of honest health-seekers are wasting a lot of their hard-earned cash on them.

Then after I'm done with this rampage, I'm going to give a last uppercut to these greedy empires by showing you some of the best anti-oxidant packed foods you can incorporate in your diet on the cheap.

Xango Mangosteen Juice: or the Art of Abusing Credulity

I've never told you that, but a long time ago (over 12 years) -- I briefly attempted to succeed in the "network marketing" world. For almost a year, I was involved in one such company, selling "premium dog food", believe it or not!

So I got a lot of insights into the world of "network marketing." While it's certain that there are many good companies that operate under this model, there's definitely also a whole lot of bad ones.

When I first joined this MLM (Multi-Level Network) company, the big guru told us that MLM was the future of the world. That in ten years 80% of the products would be distributed that way (which obviously hasn't happened, 10 years later... not even close).

He also told us that because MLM bi-passes the "big distribution network", it allowed the distribution of higher quality products at a lower cost.

My experience with many Multi-Level-Networking companies I have encountered proves this to be wrong. Generally, the products they sell are very high-priced. Unless you actually join as a distributor, you literally pay several times the actual market value of the product.

I've also found that while there are a few good MLM companies with good products, most companies are selling suspect items to gullible consumers. Many of these products have actually very little value, and are 90% hype, marketing and exaggerated claims.

Of course, they always have a cute little story to back it up. How the founder of the company had a "vision" and a "dream" to improve the nutrition of the entire world, and how he founded his company to fulfill his higher mission.

I particularly like how they talk about this one "scientist" from Japan (ever noticed they're all from Japan?) who found the fountain of youth in some ancient plant, and wants to share it with the western world.

Let's talk about this Mangosteen Juice

The company Xango sells their exotic fruit drink made with mangosteen. This fruit is not related to the "mango". When I was in Bali, I ate mangosteens by the kilo, and they were very inexpensive. In Asia, the mangosteen is regarded the "queen of the fruit" for its delicate taste.

Xango sells their mangosteen juice as a "miracle cure". Actually, what they sell is some mangosteen product mixed with the juices of about eight other fruits. And at $32.50 per bottle, this fruit juice better be good!

Actually, if you start to believe their marketing literature, this juice is nothing short of a miracle cure.

According to Xango, there are more than 20 "human health benefits" to their mangosteen juice, from "anti-microbial" to "anti-cancer".

Supposedly, we should drink their juices because of "xanthones", a "powerful antixidant" that "may help maintain intestinal health, strengthen the immune system, neutralize free radicals, help support cartilage and joint function, and promote a healthy seasonal respiratory system."

However since they don't have any serious research to back this claim up, Xango adds this disclaimer as a footnote: "These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease".

Xango is in the business for the bux

Anyone who knows network marketing knows how the system works. Independent distributors are selling the products but mainly recruiting other distributors in order to get a percentage off their sales.

Generally the motivated network marketer will aggressively sell the products to his own friends, relatives and neighbors.

(I remember when I was in this "dog food" company and I phoned the entire list of names from my high school year, in order to pitch them the dog food product!)

With this system, the more distributors a person can recruit, the more money they can make. And the company itself provides all of the marketing material they need to generate as much buzz as possible.

Like all similar products sold through the same kind of system, Xango has some kind of resemblance of scientific truth that they exaggerate to the extreme to sell their product.

Countless Other Products

The marketing, the claims, and the suspicious research behind Xango's success resembles mysteriously to a lot of other similar products we've seen marketed over the last few years. I'm referring to:

- Noni fruit juice

- Goji Berry juice

- Aloe Vera juice

The same story here, the same scam, with a different product. In fact, I've found that both the Chief Financial Officer AND the president of Xango worked previously for Tahitian Noni International, another company selling their own miracle cure.

When I look at a $35 bottle of "anti-oxidant-rich" mangosteen juice, I can't help to laugh and think to myself, "what kind of idiot would spend that kind of money (plus shipping) for a bottle of fruit juice?"

Let's not forget what these companies are after.

A few years ago, more than one person wanted to take advantage of my "big mailing list" to sign me up as a Xango distributor. They tried to convince me that I would make "so much money" if I used the power of my mailing list to sell this product, and recruit other distributors.

I didn't consider for a single second to do that and never gave replied to those requests (one came from a friend of mine).

What's interesting is that everyone who came to me to tell me about mangosteen juice spent more time to explain how much money I could make with it, rather than try to convince me it was a really good product. It's almost as if the product is irrelevant, as long as the rest is in place.

Some Anti-Oxidant Rich Foods: Cheap Alternatives

Okay, now that I feel a little better to have expressed my truth about this mangosteen juice, let me give you some quick tips that these companies certainly don't want you to know.

1- Berries -- Berries are by far the one of the richest sources of antioxidants, particularly wild blueberry. I suggest having as many berries as you can. Plus they are particularly enjoyable to eat. When wild blueberries are in season, freeze them in ridiculous quantities and use them throughout the year.

2- Pomegranate Juice -- Pomegranate Juice is a very high source of cancer-fighting anti-oxidants. You can either purchase fresh pomegranates and make the juice yourself, or purchase pomegranate concentrate (which is still a high source of anti-oxidants).
